In his purist approach to architecture and design, Eero Saarinen sought the essential idea and reduced it to the most efficient structural solution. One of the most exemplary examples is the single-leg design of his Pedestal collection. These stately, effortless pieces grew out of his desire to eliminate the confusion caused by “the slum of legs” under typical chairs and tables. Since then, the Tulip chair and accompanying Pedestal table have become symbols of mid-century modern design and pillars of Knoll’s design legacy.
