The 108 chair was originally designed by Finn Juhl in 1955. At first glance, it may look like any ordinary dining chair. On closer inspection, however, surprising details are revealed, such as the angled side rails and sliding cross rails. These details add unexpected movement and dynamism to the chair’s construction. The chair is available in oak, walnut or black paint finishes, and can be upholstered in fabric or leather. To this day, Finn Juhl’s designs remain unconventional and defy expectations with subtle details. Finn Juhl himself once said that ‘the deviation is in the detail’. This also applies to his 108 chair, which is defined by elegant and subtle details such as angled side rails and sliding crossbars, which add unexpected movement and dynamism to the construction.

The Whisky Chair was designed by Finn Juhl in 1948 and is characterized by the designer’s artistic sense of shape, function, and detail. Finn Juhl played a groundbreaking role in the Danish Modern design movement as his sculptural furniture manifested Denmark’s position as a pioneering country within furniture design.

The exclusive chair was originally presented at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1948, as part of Finn Juhl’s concept “The Living Room of an Art Collector”, but was not put into production. Finn Juhl always dared to stand alone and was unconcerned about the critics who found his designs too extravagant.

Upon purchase, customers will receive a unique mouth-blown glass crafted by glassmaker Mikkel Yerst. Finn Juhl’s original drawing does not depict the glass, meaning that the chair itself has served as the inspiration for the powerful shape of the specially designed glass.

Finn Juhl is known for adding visual lightness to his designs, and the Nyhavn Desk is no exception. The desk is manufactured in different sizes and available with a veneered table top in teak, oak, walnut, Oregon pine or linoleum in the colours ‘black’ or ‘mushroom’ with matching wooden toes on burnished steel legs. Alternatively, the legs are available in black, orange or light blue. The table can be ordered with a tray unit with three drawers in a warm or cold range of colours. When Finn Juhl established his first studio at the exclusive address of 33 Nyhavn in central Copenhagen in 1945, he designed a very simple desk with burnished steel legs, a detail which came to shape his furniture design during the 1950s. When Finn Juhl moved his studio to 38 Sølvgade in 1957, these same tables were still used.

When Finn Juhl designed the Nyhavn Desk he was inspired by the simplistic designs of his American counterparts, in particular Charles Eames. However, his sense of functionality and detail is what adds real character to this piece.

The 109 Chair is functional in a dining setup at home as well as in a restaurant, a hotel or in a conference room. The chair is manufactured in oak or walnut and with upholstery in textile or leather. In this design, it is in particular the uniquely detailed armrests, that make the chair interesting and elegant. Apart from the comfort that Finn Juhl is so famous for, the armrest of the 109 Chair are almost intimately shaped to fit a small hollowing at the tip, which perfectly fits the plum of a thumb. These details emphasize the expert precision of the craftsmanship.

The iconic Chieftain Chair is one of Finn Juhl’s absolute masterpieces, representing the peak of his career as a furniture designer. At its introduction in 1949, the chair marked a renewal of the Danish furniture design tradition. Today, it is perceived as one of the most important exponents of the Danish Modern movement in the US during the 1950s. The chair is available in walnut or oak with upholstery in selected, exclusive leather types.

Today, the Chieftain Chair is perceived as one of the most important exponents of the Danish Modern movement in the US during the 1950s. For this reason, Finn Juhl is often considered the founding father of Danish Modern.

Inspired by modern art and foreign cultures, the Chieftain Chair with its organic shapes, liberated itself from traditional Danish furniture design and strict functionalism in both shape, construction and materials.

In 2012, the Chieftain Chair won the Danish Design Award, Classic. The jury said in its motivation: ”Today, the Chieftain Chair stands as an inspiration to a new generation of furniture designers and as proof that attention to quality, international calibre and a will to break away from tradition can pave the way to make a difference as a designer”.

The France Chair was designed for the American market in 1956 and is recognized by its fine details; the seat and back are lifted from the frame while the armrests have the iconic paper knife detail. The chair is available in oak, smoked oak, black painted oak or walnut with hand sewn upholstery in textile, leather or sheepskin. Finn Juhl rode a wave of international success during the 1950s – in part thanks to his partnership with the Danish furniture manufacturer France & Son. C.W.F. France was an English businessman who moved to Denmark in 1936 to run a small mattress factory together with cabinetmaker Eric Daverkosen, who passed away the following year. During the 1950s, the company became extremely successful.

In 1954 France & Daverkosen accounted for 60% of all Danish furniture exports and the factory employed 350 people at its peak. In 1957, the company changed its name to France & Son, when his son James France joined the company. In 1966 the company was sold to Poul Cadovious.
