The S 243 has a tubular steel frame and a moulded plywood seat and backrest. Designer Frank Rettenbacher has pared back the materials to maximise form and function, creating a lightweight, four-leg, stacking chair that meets all the requirements of today’s homes and work spaces. The S 243 has a clear, logical design: the two supporting back legs have a diameter of 25 mm, whereas the diameter of the front legs is a slimmer 18 mm. The front legs form one continuous visible line from the front side to where they meet and connect with the back legs, giving the chair its airy, lightweight appearance.

The bentwood technique perfected by Michael Thonet was a source of inspiration for Marcel Breuer’s experiments with bent tubular steel. The set of four B 9 nesting tables was developed from this idea. The small tables can be used in many ways: as side tables in seating groups, as practical storage surfaces or as the perfect place for a vase of fresh flowers. After use, the tables can easily be placed under each other to save space. The special feature of this range is its functional simplicity: the table set consists solely of chrome-plated, curved tubular steel and rectangular panels.

During his time at the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer experimented with steel and tubular steel, a promising new material for furniture. Breuer was in close contact with the aircraft manufacturer Junkers in Dessau, which accelerated the development process. His first designs included the B 9 nesting tables, as well as various shelves and occasional furniture. Thonet’s 1930/31 catalog included the entire product range. Breuer originally designed the B 9 for the cafeteria in the Bauhaus building in Dessau. The small, versatile table was also used extensively in Walter Gropius’ student apartments and in the Masters’ Houses.

Marcel Breuer’s S 285 tubular steel desk S 285 for Thonet is a successful example of the Bauhaus’s programmatic claim to combine art and technology into a new entity. The 118 chair is a continuation of this principle and, with a nod to the company’s heritage, takes it a step further. The shape of the chair legs is another special feature: rounded on the outside and straight on the inside, a design that alludes to the horseshoe shape of the seating surface. The bentwood seat shell and the handcrafted seat covered with yoke are reminiscent of 214, the archetypal Thonet chair. The range has been extended with the 118 H stools. The newest member of this chair range is the 118 FV, a cozy armchair that offers even more space and comfort. This design was created by Sebastian Herkner specifically for fine dining environments and features a larger seat and a wider, slightly more reclined backrest.
