It’s as if Marcel Breuer had anticipated today’s home offices and laptops: The compact tubular steel desk S 285 he designed is an elegant companion for modern work and lifestyle. Marcel Breuer’s S 285 tubular steel desk S 285 for Thonet is a successful example of the Bauhaus’s programmatic claim to combine art and technology into a new entity. Breuer was a carpenter by training and combined his knowledge of tubular steel as a material with his expertise in interior design. The table top and storage elements made of varnished or stained wood fit harmoniously into the tubular steel frame. The supporting structure is formed by a curved line, and the wooden elements characterized by clear shapes seem to float in it. This piece of furniture with formally balanced proportions represents an important piece of contemporary history, known as “The New Objectivity”. Thonet produces several versions of this striking model.
